# Example of Material tolerance

### Example <a href="#materials" id="materials"></a>

For this example, I want to add a Tolerance called Wine Fermentation Temperature to a wine product to define operational temperature limits during fermentation on every order that produces this material.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Start by going to ***Settings > Material Definition > Materials***.

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2Fv057VaaJmWXXiPyUcGeJ%2Fimg.png?alt=media&amp;token=e9d23893-855e-44b6-85fe-745775fb625f" alt="Left sidebar navigation menu in TilliT showing Settings expanded, with a highlight on the &#x22;Materials&#x22; option under &#x22;Material Definition&#x22;"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the material you want to edit. In this example, we're going to open ***Malbec 2024 – 750ml.***

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2F5uURK8pc7kJD8vPg1zfu%2Fimg.png?alt=media&amp;token=0d415c39-edb1-4a7e-9aad-395151b85f57" alt="Material list showing different wine items, with a row highlighted for &#x22;Malbec 2024 - 750ml&#x22;"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Scroll to the ***Tolerances*** panel and click to open.

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2FNrolT2Txg1OGYim9in0c%2Fimg.png?alt=media&amp;token=5ddbe452-3859-48b9-9bd0-6fbed460278e" alt="Details page for Malbec 2024 - 750ml showing the Tolerances section expanded"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click on the **Create** button.

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2FNwMka9AwBLDfih9K5EFn%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=5ed60bbb-8dba-4f1f-818e-e1432870c9f4" alt="Tolerances panel highlighting the Create action button"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
You will be presented with a pop-up modal asking you to select an existing [Process Variable](/tillit/knowledge-base/setting-up-tillit/configuration/process-variable.md) from the drop-down menu or create a new one.

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2Fyu4hbtNqc805j56skxSi%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=f4091305-2de7-491e-a418-2f9926f61e87" alt="Create Material Telerance pop-up displaying a dropdown menu with the search term &#x22;wine&#x22; entered for thew Process Variable field"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Fill in the operational limits as relevant.

<figure><img src="https://352909507-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrNT40XJFAFlAhUX8CcQS%2Fuploads%2FVOWTbZkBkmVAcQHQiV3r%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=674d2cd4-2d97-476f-b840-f7399e59f955" alt="Pop-up modal with numerical operational limits entered for &#x22;Wine Fermentation Temperature&#x22;: Lower Limit 18, Target 20, Upper Limit 24, Upper Warning Limit 23, and Lower Warning Limit 19"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click ***Save and close*** to finalise.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

This tolerance will now be defined on all orders that use the ***Malbec 2024 – 750ml*** material.
