# Data Tags

Now that you have a data source and it is connected, you can start adding data tags.

An Edge Data Tag represents the smallest data mapping unit in TilliT Edge, linking a source variable or memory address \[*Source Address]* and its data type \[*Source Data Type*] directly to a specific asset \[*Asset*]. It allows for real-time data transformations and logic application through scale options \[*scale*], counter overflow handling \[*rollover]*, or evaluation expressions \[*RTLE*]. Each tag is configured using essential attributes, including name, asset association, source address, source data type, and optional templates or process variables.

## Navigation

{% hint style="info" %}
Go to **Settings > Edge > Data Tags or Settings > Edge > Data Sources**, then select the relevant **Data Source**, and locate the **Edge Data Tag** panel, and click to open.
{% endhint %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click Save and open.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Your new Edge Data Tag has now been created, but has not been sent to the edge as indicated by the blue symbol as the status. To do this, click the **Publish Configuration** button on the selected edge

Wait for the Edge to report back. If all is good, then the status symbol will update to a green tick and you will see a last value populate, confirm this value is as expected. If the read failed, then a red symbol will show the cause of the failure by hovering over the status.\

| Source Data Type | whether the data tag is a boolean (digital), number or string (text) |
| Template | how TilliT should interpret this data tag. Read more on templates [here](/tillit/knowledge-base/setting-up-tillit/edge/data-tags/data-tag-templates.md). |
| Process Variable | if you set a process variable, TilliT will store the data value as a time series. Read more on this [here](https://secure.helpscout.net/docs/60209ebeac2f834ec5386405/article/603afd0b0a2dae5b58fb41e2/Process%20Variable). |
